There are three kinds of NPC (non-player character) that you can expect to encounter while playing on TCbT2. These are: * The pure NPC. A non-player character created for a specific purpose, generally plot-related. These characters are almost always played for a limited period of time, determined by the needs of the staffer or player who has created the NPC. * The 'assumed' NPC. These are the people who fill the IC world but are not necessarily being actively played at any given time. Storekeepers, Freehold guards, grocery store employees and random surfers on the beach can all fall into this category. It is important to remember that even when there are no other PCs in the area, you are not necessarily 'alone'. * The SCPC. 'SCPC' stands for 'storyteller controlled player character'. These are characters created for plot purposes but not necessarily played by a member of staff. They will act autonomously save when instructed to do otherwise, but will obey any and all storyteller instructions if asked to do so. Players of NPCs and SCPCs are under no obligation to reveal their status. So no, you will not always know that the person you're interacting with exists for plot reasons. This is how the game works. Every NPC is treated as an actual character on this game, not merely part of a faceless horde. Every NPC that is actually involved in plot, rather than being a part of the setting, must have a name, some general background information, and at least basic stats approved by staff before they will be agreed to exist. This doesn't mean you can't emit mortal influence in public areas or crowd reactions. It means that you can't suddenly have a Strength 7 troll bodyguard named 'Bubba' just because you're in trouble. Significant mortals, contacts and guards can be NPCs, but are encouraged to be played by PCs. If they must be NPCs, please play them as realistically as possible. Staff is willing to assume NPC roles as needed.
