News Dross

When Glamour appears in solid, rather than ethereal form, it becomes 'dross'
-- physical items that can be broken down for the magic they contain. Dross
can be created by balefires, found in glades, or form out of treasured mortal
items. Treasures are technically dross, as they can be destroyed for the
Glamour that they contain. Voile can be considered a very, very minor form of
dross, being clothing with a fae element to it, although most voile wouldn't
even be worth a single point of Glamour if destroyed. You cannot stave off
Banality by burning all your clothes.

Dross can be acquired in a variety of ways. Most Freeholds will produce the
occasional point of dross, usually of a type that suits the Freehold itself: a
haunted mansion might produce Glamour-infused cobwebs, while a fairy glade
could grow really potent magic mushrooms. People who are familiar with the
Freehold will likely know how to identify the dross, and where it is likely to
appear. Others may need to ken to determine the exact character of the dross
in an area.

Dross can also be found, although more rarely, in places such as flea markets,
second-hand bookshops and antique stores. Treasured teddy bears, silver spoons
and books of poetry sometimes acquire their own aura of magic, which can be
used by the changeling willing to destroy the treasures for their Glamour.
Most 'good hunting grounds' are staked out and guarded jealously (see the
'dross' background for more information on these hunting places -- '+stat/info
dross').

It is sometimes possible to acquire dross by killing certain types of chimera,
such as unicorns, golden hinds or salmon of wisdom. The horns of unicorns, the
blood of a hind and the flesh of a talking fish have been infused with power
by the weight of the legends behind them. These Glamourous items must be
consumed in order to be of any use, and there may be side effects; eating a
salmon of wisdom, for example, may leave you unable to shut out the pained
cries of other fish who don't wish to be devoured, while drinking manticore
venom will leave you with a restored Glamour rating, and also quite, quite
dead. Most chimera are like voile: destroying them will gain you nothing, save
perhaps the hatred of any other chimera of that type who happened to be in the
area.

Any piece of dross used for its Glamour will be totally destroyed, regardless
of its origin.
